Starfish- beautiful or a wolf in sheep’s clothing -in Martha’s Vineyard starfish
I was boating in Menemsha with my sister when I saw a startfish in the crystal clear water and commented on its beauty. My baby sister wrinkled her nose and said “You know they are predators. They eat shell fish. They are not that nice.” I couldn’t believe that she had such strong feeling about the beautiful starfish. I was stunned when I found out she was right.
A few starfish facts from the Larrier House:
· Star fish eat mollusks such as clams, oysters, some snails and even smaller star fish.
· Star fish mouths are located on the underside of the body
· Starfish can eat three times their weight. They wreak havoc to oyster bed. One year in Connecticut 42,000 bushels of starfish were removed from oyster beds, but only after doing $632,500 of damage.1
· Star fish surround their prey with their arms and push their stomach through their mouths. Their stomach attaches to its prey and they begin the digestive process.
· Starfish are capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction
So what do you think? Are starfish friend or foe? Weigh in at the Larrier House Facebook page or this blog site and let us know what you think.

FIRE WORKS IN AUGUST-A MEMORY
Every August Oak Bluffs is the location of a large fireworks display. There is live music played from a gazebo located at Ocean Park followed by fireworks after dark.
I had the most perfect “non-date” night last summer at the fireworks show in Oak Bluffs. I call it a non-date because even though my companion was charming and handsome, there was no romantic interest on either of our parts. Despite this, the night was still fun and magical. The evening began with friends, drinks and conversation on a porch in Oak Bluffs. As dusk turned into night, my companion and I left the comfort of the porch and walked by the moonlight towards the firework site, passing cocktail parties and picnic dinners along the way to the main viewing site. The site is usually was filled with people on blankets waiting for the nighttime spectacle.
As we approached our destination – the Norton House on Ocean Park , there were women in causal outfits, men in khakis and kids running with sparklers; a picture so Americana it was surreal. As one of the many homeowners on Ocean Park , the Norton’s generously host an annual private party the night of the fireworks and provide all guests with dinner and limited bar. As the fireworks display began, my companion and I found a set of Adirondack chairs and gazed into the sky. Afterwards we went to Ben & Bills for ice cream.
You too can make your own fireworks memory by visits Martha’s Vineyard in August. If you already have a fireworks memory, visit the Larrier House on Facebook at tell us about it.

Mail boxes on Martha’s Vineyard -mailing to Martha's Vineyard
As strange or as quaint as it may seem, most Martha’s Vineyard homes do not have mail boxes. In general if you want to send mail to someone on the Vineyard you most likely will have to use a P.O. Box address. Only UPS and FedEx is guaranteed to deliver to homes. The Larrier House suggest that you check the mailing address with the recipient before you send a packages or letters.

The Larrier House loves the events hosted by Divas Uncorked in August. Bacchus (the Greek god of wine) would give these event two thumbs up.

Events have a light, supportive atmosphere for the novice and more advanced workshops for those with mature palates and a wider wine knowledge base. Some events are free while others are fee based. Martha’s Martha's Vineyard African American Film Festival- a short walk from the Larrier House
The films and topic are always diverse and engaging. Last year a lucky family that stayed at the Larrier House was able to make the short walk to the viewing location. Getting early detailed film information (late winter/early spring) may be tough, but by August all of the movie titles and summaries are available. Tickets however may not be so visit http://www.mvaaff.com/ for more information.

Wine & Women is a group whose meeting locations and event days vary and are communicated through email. The gatherings take place at various people’s homes. (The one I attend was hosted at a house that sat on a beautiful pastoral field surrounded by woods and flowers.) Each attendee is asked to bring a bottle of wine and/or an appetizer or snack.
Those who rent the Larrier House in Vineyard Haven are able to use the house’s wine refrigerator to store their bottles. Friend the Larrier House on Facebook and tell us your favorite vintage.

THE BEST SEA FOOD MEAL ON MARTHA's VINEYARD- GO SEE STANLEY
In the small scenic fishing village of Menemsha , where people still make their living from the sea there is a man named Stanley Larsen who is co-owner of a store called the Menemsha Fish Market. Like finding a pearl in an oyster, the market’s humble and rough exterior gives way to a shinny and precious gift of affordable scrumptious hot meals. My favorite is the whole lobster, cold salad, a cup of bisque or chowder and a stuffed clam for $19.95. Other offerings include an array of fresh fish ready for the pan or grill and boating charters.
My sister and I had an opportunity to clam and mussel with Mr. Larsen at 5:00 am one rainy spring day. While we worked, we were treated to a few true sea stories. Two that I remember most vividly are...
· Stanley was faced with two decisions. The first to cut off his leg which was caught in and subsequently ground to the bone by a gear located in the hold of the old fishing vessel he often captained alone. Or bleed to death while waiting for the salt sprayed Coast Guard cavalry to ride in on a misty Atlantic wave. Stanley began to search the many pockets of his coat…
· As the enormous wave bore down on him, Stanley clasped onto the mast with all his might preparing for the plunge into the icy unforgiving ocean. In a matter of seconds he was engulfed by the cold ocean and forced into the sea. Ears popping and holding his breath, he waited for the ship to right itself. That strange baptism happened many times over until…
To hear the rest of the stories or have great fresh seafood, visit The Menemsha Fish Market,
56 Basin Rd , Dutcher's Dock, Menemsha, menemshafishmarket@yahoo.com, Phone: (508) 645-2282. It is worth the trip (and tell Stanley Larson Sharon says hi!).

THE TABERNACLE - MOVIES AND SINGING
The Tabernacle, located in Oak Bluffs, is a wrought iron and wood octagonal, no walls cupola that seats 3,000. The upper most portion of the structure has stained glass. The Tabernacle hosts interdenominational Sunday services, special events, Grand Illumination night, movies and community sings. I never miss a Community sing and everyone should try to attend at least one illumination night.
The Community Sings are held at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays during July and August and open to all. Song books containing various types of music are given to attendees. The singing efforts are led by Director Bob Cleasby. You don’t have to be a great or even good singer. The sing is just a time to get together and have some fun. On any particular Wednesday you could end up singing with over 100 other people.
The Tabernacle also hosts a family movie series. Selected Monday evening movies are shown. I have seen everything from Alfred Hitchcock films to cartoons.
The Larrier House has a piano for visitors to play. Visit the Larrier House on Facebook and tell us about your musical experiences on Martha's Vineyard .

BIRTHDAY SUITS
Did you know that Martha’s Vineyard has a nude beach? If you want to sun in your birthday suit, go to Moshup Beach at Gay Head Point and walk away from the entrance.
If you do what most tourist do and visit the red cliffs of Aquinnah, be careful when you post your pictures on Facebook. One vacationer (who always stays at the Larrier House) took beautiful pictures of the cliffs and herself looking off into the ocean. She posted the photos on Facebook only to find out two days later via email from a friend that there were two naked people in the background of her photos! When the picture was blown up and posted, their naked bodies were very visible!

LOBSTER ROLLS AND MARTHA’S VINEYARD
Everyone has their favorite spot for lobster rolls. The Larrier House's favorite lobster roll spot is Grace Church. Their prices went up last summer, but it is still the best place to get lobster roll on the Island .
Every Friday evening the church serves up heaping lobster salad on fresh rolls. The sandwich includes a bag of chips and beverage. You can even order ahead by calling Grace Church Lobster Roll Hotline at 508-693-0332. While picking up your roll, consider donating money to The Red Stocking Fund. The Fund distributes food vouchers to island families and toys to children. Its roots date to 1938, when Mrs. Harris M. Crist asked her friends to fill six red stockings with gifts for needy children.
Lucky for those who stay at the Larrier House, Grace Church is only a one minute drive from the house.

Farms on Martha's Vineyard
Farms on Martha’s Vineyard are plentiful; there are over 26 farms located on the island. These farms sell fruit, vegetables, pies, eggs, meat and herbs. Two of my favorite are the Native Teaching Farm and Whippoorwill Farm.
Native Teaching Farm is so cool and kid friendly. You can see a wide array of animals walking freely around the farm. You may also buy fresh eggs while you are there. It is a nice place to stop while you meander up-island.
Whippoorwill Farm offers residents and visitors organic, locally-grown produce and flowers at reasonable prices.
For a list of most of the Vineyard farms, including hours, and food offerings use the map created by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission http://www.mvol.com/images/farms/farms.pdf
Like to cook? The Larrier House offers a large kitchen complete with great equipment allowing visitors to take advantage of the Vineyard’s local fresh food. Take a look at the kitchen on the Larrier House on Facebook.

Getting around Martha's Vineyard- Martha's Vineyard public transportation
At the Larrier House we are often asked "How can I get around the island if I do not own a car or bike?" The answer is simple. Martha’s Vineyard has a great bus system! The bus is a “flag stop company” which means in addition to set stops, the bus will stop for you any where on its route. You must however flag the bus down and be standing on the side of the road in the direction you want to go. Flagging a bus is the equivalent of flagging down a cab in a big city.
Taking the bus from the Larrier House is easy. All you have to do is leave the Larrier House, walk to the sidewalk, flag the bus and it will stop and pick you up. THE BEST LOBSTER MEAL

STATE ROAD RESTAURANT
The restaurant is an up-island treat. Located in the town of West Tisbury on
State Road, the restaurant has great food served in a laid back atmosphere. Reasonably priced, the restaurant offers one of the Larrier House’s favorite meals from last summer, trout grilled on a wood plank with salad. The menu varies but everything is good.

Some Local’s gripe that restaurant representatives allegedly said that State Road would stay open year around and not limit its hours. Unfortunately, that did not happen this winter, disappointing the palates of many year rounder’s.

BACK DOOR DONUTS
My friend Robin W. could not stop talking about the apple fritter she had last summer at Back Door Doughnuts, located at 5 Post Office Square in Oak Bluffs. The bakery is open not only during normally business hours, but nightly from 9:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.! According to her, a close second are the fritters found at the Black Dog.
