Starfish- beautiful or a wolf in sheep’s clothing -in Martha’s Vineyard starfish
I was boating in Menemsha with my sister when I saw a startfish in the crystal clear water and commented on its beauty. My baby sister wrinkled her nose and said “You know they are predators. They eat shell fish. They are not that nice.” I couldn’t believe that she had such strong feeling about the beautiful starfish. I was stunned when I found out she was right.
A few starfish facts from the Larrier House:
· Star fish eat mollusks such as clams, oysters, some snails and even smaller star fish.
· Star fish mouths are located on the underside of the body
· Starfish can eat three times their weight. They wreak havoc to oyster bed. One year in Connecticut 42,000 bushels of starfish were removed from oyster beds, but only after doing $632,500 of damage.1
· Star fish surround their prey with their arms and push their stomach through their mouths. Their stomach attaches to its prey and they begin the digestive process.
· Starfish are capable of both sexual and asexual reproduction
So what do you think? Are starfish friend or foe? Weigh in at the Larrier House Facebook page or this blog site and let us know what you think.

FIRE WORKS IN AUGUST-A MEMORY
Every August Oak Bluffs is the location of a large fireworks display. There is live music played from a gazebo located at Ocean Park followed by fireworks after dark.
I had the most perfect “non-date” night last summer at the fireworks show in Oak Bluffs. I call it a non-date because even though my companion was charming and handsome, there was no romantic interest on either of our parts. Despite this, the night was still fun and magical. The evening began with friends, drinks and conversation on a porch in Oak Bluffs. As dusk turned into night, my companion and I left the comfort of the porch and walked by the moonlight towards the firework site, passing cocktail parties and picnic dinners along the way to the main viewing site. The site is usually was filled with people on blankets waiting for the nighttime spectacle.
As we approached our destination – the Norton House on Ocean Park , there were women in causal outfits, men in khakis and kids running with sparklers; a picture so Americana it was surreal. As one of the many homeowners on Ocean Park , the Norton’s generously host an annual private party the night of the fireworks and provide all guests with dinner and limited bar. As the fireworks display began, my companion and I found a set of Adirondack chairs and gazed into the sky. Afterwards we went to Ben & Bills for ice cream.
You too can make your own fireworks memory by visits Martha’s Vineyard in August. If you already have a fireworks memory, visit the Larrier House on Facebook at tell us about it.

Mail boxes on Martha’s Vineyard -mailing to Martha's Vineyard
As strange or as quaint as it may seem, most Martha’s Vineyard homes do not have mail boxes. In general if you want to send mail to someone on the Vineyard you most likely will have to use a P.O. Box address. Only UPS and FedEx is guaranteed to deliver to homes. The Larrier House suggest that you check the mailing address with the recipient before you send a packages or letters.
