LOBSTER ROLLS AND MARTHA’S VINEYARD

Everyone has their favorite spot for lobster rolls.  The Larrier House's favorite lobster roll spot is Grace Church. Their prices went up last summer, but it is still the best place to get lobster roll on the Island

Every Friday evening the church serves up heaping lobster salad on fresh rolls.  The sandwich includes a bag of chips and beverage.  You can even order ahead by calling Grace Church Lobster Roll Hotline at 508-693-0332.  While picking up your roll, consider donating money to The Red Stocking Fund.  The Fund distributes food vouchers to island families and toys to children. Its roots date to 1938, when Mrs. Harris M. Crist asked her friends to fill six red stockings with gifts for needy children.

Lucky for those who stay at the Larrier House, Grace Church is only a one minute drive from the house.

Farms on Martha's Vineyard

Farms on Martha’s Vineyard are plentiful; there are over 26 farms located on the island.  These farms sell fruit, vegetables, pies, eggs, meat and herbs. Two of my favorite are the Native Teaching Farm and Whippoorwill Farm.

Native Teaching Farm is so cool and kid friendly. You can see a wide array of animals walking freely around the farm. You may also buy fresh eggs while you are there. It is a nice place to stop while you meander up-island.

Whippoorwill Farm offers residents and visitors organic, locally-grown produce and flowers at reasonable prices.

For a list of most of the Vineyard farms, including hours, and food offerings use the map created by the Martha’s Vineyard Commission  http://www.mvol.com/images/farms/farms.pdf

Like to cook?  The Larrier House offers a large kitchen complete with great equipment allowing visitors to take advantage of the Vineyard’s local fresh food. Take a look at the kitchen on the Larrier House on Facebook.

Getting around Martha's Vineyard- Martha's Vineyard public transportation

At the Larrier House we are often asked "How can I get around the island if I do not own a car or bike?"  The answer is simple. Martha’s Vineyard has a great bus system! The bus is a “flag stop company” which means in addition to set stops, the bus will stop for you any where on its route.  You must however flag the bus down and be standing on the side of the road in the direction you want to go.  Flagging a bus is the equivalent of flagging down a cab in a big city.

Taking the bus from the Larrier House is easy. All you have to do is leave the Larrier House, walk to the sidewalk, flag the bus and it will stop and pick you up.  The bus leaves downtown Vineyard Haven ever 15 minutes starting at 7 minutes past the hour.  The number 1 bus will take you to downtown Edgartown.

THE BEST LOBSTER MEAL

In the small scenic fishing village of Menemsha, where people still make their living from the sea there is a man named Stanley Larsen who is co-owner of a store called the Menemsha Fish Market. Like finding a pearl in an oyster, the market’s humble and rough exterior gives way to a shinny and precious gift of affordable scrumptious hot meals. My favorite is the whole lobster, cold salad, a cup of bisque or chowder and a stuffed clam for $19.95. Other offerings include an array of fresh fish ready for the pan or grill and boating charters.

My sister and I had an opportunity to clam and mussel with Mr. Larsen at 5:00 am one rainy spring day.  While we worked, we were treated to a few true sea stories. Two that I remember most vividly are...

·         Stanley was faced with two decisions. The first to cut off his leg which was caught in and subsequently ground to the bone by a gear located in the hold of the old fishing vessel he often captained alone. Or bleed to death while waiting for the salt sprayed Coast Guard cavalry to ride in on a misty Atlantic wave. Stanley began to search the many pockets of his coat…

·         As the enormous wave bore down on him, Stanley clasped onto the mast with all his might preparing for the plunge into the icy unforgiving ocean. In a matter of seconds he was engulfed by the cold ocean and forced into the sea. Ears popping and holding his breath, he waited for the ship to right itself. That strange baptism happened many times over until…

To hear the rest of the stories or have great fresh seafood, visit The Menemsha Fish Market,
56 Basin Rd
, Dutcher's Dock, Menemsha,  menemshafishmarket@yahoo.com, Phone: (508) 645-2282.  It is worth the trip (and tell Stanley Larson Sharon says hi!).

Howard University alumni’s creation of Bison on the Vineyard is sheer genius. Where better to have an event than Martha’s Vineyard?  Most Bison on the Vineyard activities are open to all and consist of dynamic speakers, movie screening, wine tasting, book signing, boat rides, parties and beach time. There is even an opportunity for lawyers to obtain CLE’s (for free).  Book early if you want to attend this event.  For more information visit the Howard University Alumni Website.

STATE ROAD RESTAURANT

The restaurant is an up-island treat. Located in the town of West Tisbury on
State Road, the restaurant has great food served in a laid back atmosphere.  Reasonably priced, the restaurant offers one of the Larrier House’s favorite meals from last summer, trout grilled on a wood plank with salad. The menu varies but everything is good.

Some Local’s gripe that restaurant representatives allegedly said that State Road would stay open year around and not limit its hours.  Unfortunately, that did not happen this winter, disappointing the palates of many year rounder’s.
